The definition of social work as a profession is very broad. Social Workers are
embedded in the government, business and non-profit sectors. From Human Services
to Psychotherapy, Social Work deals with improving human behavior. Various jobs
in the field involve nursing homes, foster care, adoption, domestic violence,
drug abuse, family planning and homelessness.
Licensure to become a Social Worker is regulated by your State Board of Social Worker
Examiners. These state boards follow standards set by the International Federation
of Social Workers (IFSW) and the Association of Social Work Boards
(ASWB), which provides the exam required for licensure. Each state has its own
set of requirements. In Minnesota, to become a Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
you need a BSW degree and a passing score on the ASWB Exam. There are higher
levels of licensure with additional requirements.
