A Notary Public is usually an officer appointed by his or her state government to authenticate
documentation. Job descriptions, requirements and level of authority very from state to state.
It usually includes administering and witnessing the signing of affidavits or making written
statements providing authoritative proof of an event. Check with your state government
website to find out specific requirements.
In California you must complete a six hour course and then pass an exam. A free booklet style study
guide is available from the California Secretary of State's website. In Florida it's a three
hour class. In Maine and Illinois a Notary Public is appointed by the State Secretary of State.
In New Jersey a requirement is an endorsement from a state legislator. Some states such as Florida
require you to post a bond of several thousand dollars in the event of legal challenges.
Expect to pass a background check if you are to gain access to this very authoritative position.
