A common misunderstanding in California is that a "licensed handyman" classification is available through the
Contractor's State License Board (CSLB). I am here to set the record straight: There is no license classi-
fication for a "handyman license" designated by the Contractor's State License Board or any other licensing agency in California..
To paraphrase the relative license law/penal code: Any person or legal business entity who performs work in
a construction related field AND the total value of the work to be completed (INCLUDING TIME AND MATERIAL) is
equal to or exceeds $500.00, a valid contractor's license issued to that individual or entity is required in order to protect
the consumer and the "handyman/contractor." Penalties for contracting without a license can range from a warning to jail
or prison time depending on the magnitude of the offense.
I have personally seen people who could easily qualify for a B license, or General Builders License, get citations
and/orjail-time because they are "afraid to take the test." Let me tell you, you should be more afraid of not
taking the test and spending a few nights in jail. The only license that would possibly allow for someone to operate
legally as a handyman in California is a "Class B" or :General Contractor's License."
Call California License Services® and let our experienced license consultants help
you through the process. Ron Givens has been a key player in the construction license

There are some things and "honey do's" in and around almost every home or commercial property that needs repair and maintenance
by what most people would commonly refer to as a "Handyman." In Reality, there may in fact be some odds and ends
(i.e. small appliance repairs, air filter replacements in AC or HVAC units in homes and businesses) that anyone with a little
"fix-it" knowledge can handle and keep working for you without a hitch. If your front door is swollen due to wet weather and
doesn't open or close the way you think it should, a handyman may be qualified and capable to handle the tweaking and repairs
if they are simple and don't require a skilled craftsman that is trained an completely versed as a professional carpenter.
However, be careful to ask for references and ask for a written estimate that describes the scope of work to be done
(if you are a consumer), or be prepared to provide those types of legal documents if you are seeking to work as either a licensed
or unlicensed "handyman."
Here at Gyl.com we fully believe that there are very capable people that are qualified and have the requisite experience to
perform all kinds of complicated work in many of the different construction trades that are most often regulated by
State Agencies across the United States. We also believe that there are just as many times where there is over-regulation of
the things we are allowed to do to make a living for our families. In tough economic times like these men and women from every
field of work are willing to do just about any odd job to put food on their tables. It is very important to know what your
State and/or other municipality's laws are regarding your legal ability to do certain types of work.
Let's face it: The last thing anyone needs when they are living week-to-week and job -to-job is a citation
from a Contractor's State License Board that could add up to significant penalties and even jail or prison time!
It does not seem fair many times but I don't see the clock turning back on these types of construction related regulations
in the name of "consumer protection." Things will probably get even harder as other States follow California's new
"Green Building Code" which has just taken effect In 2011.
Once one has successfully passed the General Builders Exam and the Contractor's License "Law & Business Exam," you will be required
to provide a Contractor's Bond in the
required amount of $12,500 that usually run less than $200 per year for new contractors with decent credit. Some Insurance/Bonding companies offer bonds as
low as $116 per year without even running a credit check.
Remember that in California there are currently 43 different classifications of licenses regulated by the CSLB (under the Department
of Consumer Affairs) and a contractor
(sole proprietor or other legal entity) can hold one or more classifications of license at a time. Many contractors find it extremely
valuable to add additional classes
to their existing licenses (e.g. a General Contractor who also holds a C-36 Plumbing and a C-10 Electrical License at the same time).
