A fishing license is usually issued at the state level by the agency that
manages wildlife, which in most states is called the Department of Fish and Game
or Department of Fish and Wildlife. The application process is similar to that
of a hunting license.
There are several different types of fishing licenses, depending on the type of fish and
the intent whether for commercial purposes or private consumption. California's Multifunction
Fish Business License fee in 2007 was $1560. This license pertains to commercial
fishing companies. The state offers many other fishing licenses
at a considerable lower fee. Some of these other licenses cover Fish Importers,
Fish Receivers, Fish Wholesalers and Fish Processors. A Fisherman's Retail License
is required for anyone who catches fish and sells them to consumers.
Check with your state Fish and Game website and local government website as well
for specific licensing pertaining to your area.
