Chiropractors are health care professionals who offer care for the spine,
muscles and nervous system. The chiropractic industry is divided into four
types of practice: 1) Traditional Straight, 2) Mixer, 3) Objective Straight and
4) Reform. The Traditional Straight Chiropractor is one that follows
ideas of the original chiropractors of the late 1890s. Professionals of any
of these divisions are officially called Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) or
Chiropractic Physicians.
As with all licensure regulated at the state level, you must check your
state's specific requirements. Each state has a Board of Chiropractic Examiners
who regulate licensure. These boards come together through the National Board of
Chiropractic Examiners. This is the national organization that provides exams needed
for licensure at the state level. Another important national organization that
is well-known by professionals is the American Chiropractic Association (ACA).
In Connecticut you must complete sixty hours of pre-professional college education,
graduate from an accredited Chiropractic college and pass a few exams. A few other
procedures complete licensure, which is through the Connecticut Board of
Chiropractic Examiners. Chiropractic as a profession has gained increasing
credibility in the medical industry the past few decades.
