Brand Licensing is getting permission to use someone else's art for your
financial gain. All the major sports leagues, major motion picture companies
and other big star-makers generate revenue by licensing their names, logos and
other property to other companies. The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association
(LIMA) is the licensing organization that represents many of the greatest entities in pop culture
including the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, NASCAR, Olympics, World Cup and over
150 colleges and universities across America.
Many companies boost their public image and familiarity by incorporating famous
brands into their marketing. This merge effect creates an association with something that should
already be successful. Not every popular act will allow its material to be licensed,
but the ones that do stand a chance of making good extra money. Big profits
have been made by repackaging pop culture once proper licensing has been completed.
