What Boating or Marine License Do You Need?
Boat Registration and Marine Careers
Boat registration is a very simple process across the United States
and is usually managed by the State Department of Motor Vehicles
or in some cases the state agency that oversees wildlife. The length
and type of boat affect the type of licensing involved. Check with
your state government website to find out specific licensing for your
situation.
In California boats must be registered before sailing either with the U.S. Coast Guard
or Department of Motor Vehicles. Commercial boats weighing over five net tons or
are over 30 feet in length must be registered by the U.S. Coast Guard. Sailboats
oover eight feet long and all powerboats must be registered by the State Department
of Motor Vehicles.
Carreers In Boating and Marine Life
There are numerous career opportunities in the boating and marine fields. They range from
Ship's Captain to Marine Carpenter and Crusie Ship staff. And as many careers as are available for those looking to take a life at sea, there are many caer schools
that provide the neccessary education and hands on training required to carry commercial passengers on a small fishing boat or pilot a tugboat in San Francisco Bay.
There is a wide and diverse range of opportunities for those seeking to work on boats or ships either in port or while at sea or both.
The most esteemed method of taking to a career at sea is to join the United States Navy. An even better appraoch is to seek to enter the elite United States Naval Academy
in Annapolis, Maryland. The cadets that survive and graduate from this highly reagared instituion of military and naval specialty has produced the finest sailors and naval officers in the world.
Opportunites for those that graduate from the USNA.
There really is no way to accurately describe how four years of living and breathing the life of a Naval Academy
Student will affect the lives of those who make it though. We have heard many stories of the completely exhausting and
famous "Plebe Summer" and equally as many stories of the unique experience of commanding a ship in the open seas armed with
the latest military technology and the best trained midshipmen in the world.
It should be noted that all midshipmen in the U.S. Navy must complete the four years of educational requirements that are
strict and demanding of each and every potential officer candidate. There is a very structured method to the career training
developed by the Navy and many don't make it through the four years. However, the Naval and Marine Corps officers who graduate
from this elite institution are men and women of the highest integrity and honor, proud to serve their country and each American
owes a debt of gratitude to the heroic efforts of every member of the United States Armed forces.
Back to boating: Perhaps one of the most unique opportunities offered by the Academy is spending time on a Submarine or Aircraft
Carrier or both. Health and physical fitness are extremely important to those who will serve as sailors in any career field and
should be considered a priority for anyone considering the physically demanding jobs in the maritime employment field. It is well
known that the obstacle courses presented to candidates and students at the various military training and other marine college
training facilities and education providers are more than simply challenging and must be overcome in order to complete the course
work and requirements of these post- secondary schools, universities, academies, so make sure you get you daily exercise no matter
what job you plan to go after in this exciting field.
